Bio

Valle Medina's work is formed at the intersection of lyrical substances and psychic limits.

She is based between Basel and London.

Often her work addresses collaborative estrangement, and deprival as a productive strategy.

Recent work has explored the phenomena of pulverisation as the reinvention of contemporary life-rhythms with projects such as Paris Hermitage, as well as the social and bodily effects of oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) in space with the recently built project Pastoral Complex.

Valle has been an artist-in-residence at La Becque (CH), the OMI International Center for The Arts in New York (US), the Andreas Züst Library, Oberegg (CH) and the Kyoto Arts Centre (JP). She has received awards from the Koneen Säätiö Foundation (FI), the Danish Arts Foundation (DK), the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (UK) and the Stiftung für Architektur Geisendorf (CH).

Valle is a recipient the 50th annual Shinkenchiku/Central Glass Award in Tokyo, among other international prizes. Her work has been previously shown at Silh Delta Zurich (CH), the Kyoto Arts Centre (JP), ICA (UK), Van Abbemuseum (NL), the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (ES), the Boston Centre for the Arts (US), Basis voor Actuele Kunst – BAK (NL) and the Architecture Foundation (London) and has been published widely including Volume (Amsterdam), EP with Sternberg Press (Berlin), Ecocore (London), ED (Los Angeles) and Spéciale’Z (Paris). Her work lives in several private collections such as the Permanent Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She has lectured at Columbia University in New York, ETH Zürich D-ARCH, UdK Berlin and the Architectural Association in London.

Her first major monograph —Paris Hermitage— was released in 2017, and the book —Zenith Boil— was completed in 2023 both with Cooperative Editions (New York).

She is a former Geisendorf fellow at the ETH Zürich D-ARCH, where she graduated summa cum laude from its Laboratory for Applied Virtuality, and was a fellow at the Jan van Eyck Academie (NL).

Valle is the co-founder of the studio Pa.LaC.E. She co-leds the architecture class High Holdings at the Royal College of Arts in London to respond to the gradual estrangement of the world around us by examining the therapeutic and spiritual qualities of space. It operates by (re-)developing sensibilities within the vast amounts of information that our civilisation is giving birth to.

Previously, Valle led the group Dom Gross at the Institute for Theory of Architecture and Philosophy of Technics in Vienna.
